Specific pathogen-free animals

If an animal is specific pathogen-free (SPF) it is free of disease-causing microbes or pathogens. The founder animals of an SPF colony are delivered by caesarean and more generally bred, born, reared and maintained in environments where there is no exposure to pathogens.
