Self-mutilation or self-injury in non-human mammals is an established, if imperfectly understood, phenomenon. It has been reported to occur in zoo and laboratory conditions. Laboratory rearing and isolation are important predisposing factors. Self-mutilationĀ hasĀ also been reported to occur in companion animals.
